An airport near Gothenburg was evacuated by Swedish police after fears that armed robbers had left explosives near one of the terminals. All international flights from the Airport were delayed.
The gang had smashed through a fence surrounding the airfield and driven onto the runway. The robbers stole a 'large sum' of money from a plane that had just flown in from Heathrow airport.
Police spokeswoman Maria Rosenberg said, the robbers drove up to the SAS plane when foreign currency was being loaded into a security van. The gang, some with assault rifles, held up baggage handlers who were unloading the crates of money.
The gang fled with the money, leaving behind a suspicious bag that was at first thought to be a bomb. International arrivals were rerouted to the domestic terminal. Domestic flights to and from the airport were not affected by the incident.
They abandoned two getaway vehicles some distance from the airport, on fire. The robbers spread nails on the road to prevent police pursuing them.
